Hackney Terrace

A ground floor side infill and rear extension in Lower Clapton, Hackney, draws upon a material palette of lime render, oak and polished concrete.

The existing property is a mid-terrace home built during the late nineteenth century. Our client’s brief was to extend the property to the rear to create a warm and inviting kitchen and dining space that would function both for entertaining and for everyday life. In addition, they were keen to incorporate a downstairs loo, utility space and improved access to the basement.

Having reviewed many different layout options during the concept design stage, the selected design accommodates a peninsula kitchen arrangement, which orientates the main food preparation and cooking space towards the dining table and garden. A pared back, simple material palette is proposed internally to create a sense of calm and cohesion, with the same timber finish selected for the kitchen units, the door and window frames, and the exposed roof structure.

The project is currently at the technical design stage, having been granted planning permission.
