Walthamstow Terrace

A part two-storey, part single-storey rear and side extension provides a new open-plan kitchen and dining area and additional bedroom to this Victorian terrace in Walthamstow Village.

The key challenge at this project in Walthamstow was to maximise the amount of natural light within the north-facing kitchen and dining areas at the rear of the house. By stepping the facade of the rear extension, we were able to incorporate windows along the west-facing elevation, bringing in evening light to the new informal living areas. In addition, two large roof lights ensure the infiltration of natural light into these new spaces throughout the day, minimising the need for artificial lighting.

The material palette for the rear extension comprises a warm grey brick, sage green window frames, engineered oak flooring, and a combination of grey-green plywood and black valchromat joinery. We were able to achieve planning permission for a first floor extension, enabling an additional bedroom to be provided, designed with a pitched ceiling to maximise the sense of space.
