Walthamstow Village

This ground floor rear and side extension in Walthamstow Village prioritises light, height and the use of natural materials to create a rich backdrop for family living.

Situated on a quiet residential street in Walthamstow, the existing property is an end-of-terrace Victorian house with a generous north-facing garden. The original kitchen at the back of the house was small and disconnected from both the living spaces at the front of the house and the garden at the rear. The main aim of the project was to extend this space into the garden, creating an open, connected and sociable ground floor layout.

The proposal incorporates pitched rooflights along the side addition to ensure that the north-facing space is filled with natural light throughout the year. The end-of-terrace location enables glazing along the side elevation and maintains the useful secondary access to the house. The material palette comprises a combination of natural oak and Fenix-faced joinery, with a terracotta floor and painted exposed roof joists.

The project is currently under construction.
